What is the difference between cloud storage and local recording?

With Cloud Storage, you create a custom recording rule to identify what matters to you - whether it’s people, animals, vehicles, or more - and your system will record and store clips to the cloud. Other than an Alarm.com camera, no hardware is required for cloud storage and your footage is accessible from any device. All Alarm.com service packages include cloud storage of clips, but only certain packages support Video Analytics. With local recording, cameras capture continuous footage directly to a microSD card or Stream Video Recorder (SVR). Talk to your Alarm.com service provider to find the right solution for your home.

How much video storage do I need?

The amount of video storage you need depends on how many cameras you have, how often they record, and how long you want to keep your footage.

Alarm.com cloud storage is based on your service package. Your monthly clip allowance depends on your Alarm.com service package. If you reach your monthly limit, recording rules will pause until the first of the following month, when your allowance automatically resets. You'll receive alerts at key thresholds, 50%, 80%, and 100% of your limit, so you're never caught off guard. Note that alarm-triggered clips are always captured regardless of your monthly limit.

What happens to my footage if the internet goes down?

With onboard or hardwired SVR recording enabled, your cameras continue capturing footage locally even when internet service is interrupted as long as power is maintained. Once your connection is restored, your footage remains accessible through the Smart View timeline in your Alarm.com app or website.

How do I find a specific moment in my footage?

For cloud clips, you can filter by detection type, date, and camera from the Saved Clips Gallery. Certain service packages also allow you to use AI Video Event Search to describe what you're looking for in plain language — no timestamps or manual scrubbing required. For continuous local recordings, the Smart View timeline lets you filter by camera, date, time, and key activity is highlighted on an interactive timeline so you can jump straight to what matters.

Who can access my video footage?

Can I download and save my footage?

Yes. The download manager lets you export clips from your Saved Clips Gallery or Smart View timeline directly from the Alarm.com website using our download manager*. You can also download saved clips from the mobile app. You can save footage locally or share it with others, useful for any situation where you need a record of what happened.

Do I need a service plan to use Alarm.com video storage?

Yes. Alarm.com video storage is part of the Alarm.com platform, which is delivered through a monthly service plan provided by an Alarm.com security provider Your plan determines which storage features are available to you — including your monthly cloud clip allowance and whether local recording is enabled.
